468 is the prefix of Lopez Island, WA – population 2,400 and one of the big four San Juan Islands. This little fact eluded me until I moved to Lopez full-time and people started giving me their phone numbers as just four digits. Since then, 468 has taken on a deeper meaning for me – representing how communities communicate in ways that are unique to them. 468 has also symbolized renewal, experimentation and improvisation.
Project 468 has been my quest to capture and promote the stories of Lopez Island. Since the fall of 2014, I have been interviewing and writing stories about the people and places of Lopez. Initially, my intention was to document the process of experimenting with a new app. Eventually, my focus became exclusively Lopezians and their unique stories.
