About Project 468

Project 468 is a quest to capture the essence of Lopez Island, WA – population 2,400 and one of the big four San Juan Islands. Between the fall of 2014 and summer of 2016, I sought out the unique stories of the people and places of Lopez. Those stories are now connected to place via the 468 Insider app.

468 is the one and only phone number prefix for Lopez. This little fact eluded me until I moved to Lopez full-time and people started giving me their phone numbers as just four digits. Since then, 468 has taken on a deeper meaning for me – representing how communities communicate in ways that are unique to them. 468 has also symbolized renewal, experimentation and improvisation.

  4. Hi Tim,
My wife Diana and I moved here at the end of June 2013, and we live in one of the Hamlet Cottages in the Village. So we’re traveling down that road of discovery ourselves.
I’m a storyteller and besides telling stories in classrooms at the school, and in public performances at the Gathering Place, I’ve also begun to attend the monthly Siren and Scribe evenings at the Joinery Building behind the Thrift Store. I’m going to suggest that you come to this Open Mike evening some time. You’ll find it’s an entirely different demographic piece of the Lopez Pie. Most of those attending at in their 20s and 30s, and they are all drawn to artistic expressions: poetry, singing, instrumentation (mbira, xylophones, guitars of course), and storytelling. This is great energy in this group.

  5. Glad to hear from you, Tim. There will be no event in January. Siren and Scribe will be on Thursday, February 19th. There will also be one in March, also on the 19th. I may be out of town on 2/19 but I’ll definitely be here on March 19th. So my preference would be for us both to go in March, and I’ll introduce you to the young woman who organizes the events and to the guy who provides the building.
